A web accelerator and it also features a basic traffic monitoring capabilities along with a pop-up blocker and ad-banner utility.
Pros: MyProxy seeks to improve web performance by using advanced caching techniques (DNS caching and a proprietary internal caching mechanism) along with removing unwanted pop-ups and ads which compete for system resources. Reduced data transfer volume (number of bytes) directly results in improved performance, especially on slower connections.
Additionally, it provides basic traffic monitoring capabilities to keep track of usage and cost (for traffic based tariffs). Proxy server support allows you to share a given internet connection over a LAN and still be able to monitor usage – this is useful for administrative users.
Cons: Although the ad-banner, pop-up blocker is effective it is not clear if and how the web speed is improved. DNS caching and MyProxy internal caching mechanism no doubt improves caching performance (and hence the perceived speed of loading of web-pages) however, if you have a fast connection (DSL and above) it may not make a and appreciable improvement – because it is impossible to judge millisecond differences. It mainly depends on what kind of websites you frequent – for a site like youtube.com for example there is a definite improvement for pages you have already visited. However, for a News website the difference is marginal. Unlike a standard browser based pop-up blocker the pop-up blocker here is hard to manage – that is the question of how to make useful pop-ups come up, such as a JAVAScript FAQ and so on. Interface is not attractive and needs improvement to make it more user-friendly.
Overall: 3 stars. Especially useful for users on dial-up and other relatively slower connections. Not much utility for people on faster connections.
